Australian Apprenticeships The Traineeship program is designed to combine on-the-job training with structured learning to a nationally recognised qualification. Traineeships are funded by the ACT government through the User Choice funding program.

Skilled Capital

Skilled Capital is an ACT Government funded training initiative offering a comprehensive range of services and subsidies to provide Canberrans the support they need to complete the training that is right for them.

Skilled Capital offers an opportunity for the Canberra community to access quality training and fill critical skills needs areas across a range of industries such as community services, information technology, health and construction.

JobTrainer

Job Trainer offers free vocational education and training to young people and job seekers across Canberra in areas of employment growth.

Canberrans aged over 17, who have left school, will have the opportunity to enrol in this priority regardless of their employment status.

Job Trainer is a jointly funded initiative of the Commonwealth, state and territory governments.

Australian Apprenticeships lead to a nationally recognized qualification and provide Australian Apprentices with the necessary job experience to pursue the career they want.

For Learners/Trainees

Australian Apprenticeships include apprenticeships and traineeships and combine time at work with off-the-job training and can be full-time, part-time or school-based. Australian Apprenticeships lead to a nationally recognised qualification and provide Australian Apprentices with the necessary job experience to pursue the career they want. Some Australian Apprenticeships can be started and even completed while still at school, and some can form part of a student’s Year 12 Certificate.

Australian Apprenticeships are ‘competency based’ which means training can be completed as soon as the required skill level in the qualification is reached. The job prospects for qualified people are vast, and the demand for skilled workers continues to increase.

An Australian Apprenticeship is a great way to get a head start in your chosen career.

ACT Traineeships Apprenticeship

An Australian Apprenticeship is a great way to get a head start in your chosen career. Some of the benefits include:

  • paid work and structured training that can be on-the- job, off-the-job or a combination of both
  • ‘competency based’ training which means you can complete your course faster if you reach the required skill level
  • course credit can be granted for existing skills and prior experience, potentially reducing the length of formal training
  • opportunities for full-time or part-time training and work
  • a pathway to nationally recognised qualifications and skills
  • a basis for further education and training over the course of your working life
  • a pathway from school to work.

To be eligible for an ACT training contract, you must:

  • work in the ACT, and
  • be at least 15 years of age, and
  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or New Zealand passport holder resident for more than 6 months, or
  • an eligible visa holder, and
  • receive remuneration for your work, and
  • complete a minimum of 15 hours combined work and training per week, and
  • have the required supervision in the workplace for an Australian Apprentice.

In addition to the above, Australian School-based Apprentice must:

  • be enrolled in a school under legislation that covers education in the relevant state/territory
  • combine part time work with an employer and structured industry-approved training whilst attending school
  • continue employment and on/off-the-job training throughout the year including school holidays.

For Employer – Employing an apprentice or trainee

Australian Apprenticeship combine practical work with structured learning and lead to a nationally recognised qualification. Australian Apprenticeships include both apprenticeship and traineeships and can be full-time, part-time or school-based. Australian Apprenticeships can be undertaken by both new and existing workers.

Australian Apprenticeship also provides a range of benefits for business. you can also engage an Australian Apprentices part-time while he or she is still at school.

Some of the benefits of employing an Australian Apprentice include:

  • training to meet your business needs
  • training is offered in a range of industries
  • training is offered at all certificate levels up to advanced diploma
  • there is a flexible choice of registered training organisations which provide off-the-job training with negotiations around timing, location and nature of the training to suit your business needs
  • government funding may be available to subsidise the cost of training
  • a range of financial incentives for eligible employers
  • attainment of nationally recognised qualifications.

An Australian Apprentice is generally paid an apprentice or trainee wage under an award because they spend time in training, however, in some cases an Australian Apprentice can be paid above the award wage. Wages for Australian Apprentices vary based on:

  • years of training
  • the type of apprenticeship
  • the industry or occupation.

Australian Apprentices are generally treated the same as any other employee in terms of superannuation, workers compensation and any other entitlements or requirements. For more information about Australian Apprentice workplace rights refer to the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

Only employers whose workplace address is in the ACT can enter into an ACT Australian Apprenticeship training contract. An employer can enter into an ACT training contract where the Australian Apprentice:

  • is in paid work with an ACT employer
  • is at least 15 years of age
  • is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, New Zealand passport holder resident for more than 6 months, or holds an eligible visa confirmed by Skills Canberra
  • works full-time or part-time and receives remuneration (including leave and other entitlements) for their work
  • is not a casual employee or self-employed (sub-contractor)
  • is supervised by a suitably qualified person who is permanently employed at the same workplace and predominantly for the same hours as the employee
  • undertakes a minimum of 15 hours combined work and training per week (for an Australian School-based Apprenticeship this is a minimum of 11 hours for Certificate II and 15 hours for Certificate III and a maximum of 20 hours)

Completion payment for Australian Apprentice (AA) – User Choice

The completion payment was introduced for AAs commencing on or after 1 January 2016. A completion payment will be paid directly by Skills Canberra to the AA upon completion of the qualification and a survey. The completion payment is $300 for each qualification. AAs will be eligible to receive the completion payment for up to one (1) year after successful completion of the qualification, provided up to date email and bank account details are confirmed. The AA must lodge their bank account details via the AVETARS student portal.

  • An AA is not eligible for a completion payment where more than 50% of the units are achieved through RPL (refer to Completing a Training Contract).
  • An AA may be eligible for a completion payment if more than 50% of the units are achieved via credit transfer where the achievement is the result of:
    • a training contract variation i.e. change of RTO and/or qualification; or
    • the AA undertaking a training contract with a new employer for the same qualification or its replacement in a new training contract.

This completion payment eligibility criteria will apply to AAs that complete a qualification on or after 1 January 2019.

An AA in an ACT unfunded or fee-for-service training contract is not eligible for a completion payment.
